Editor’s Note: Kate Goldstein is serving as an assistant coach of the women’s national team. She is coaching in honor of Leket, Israel’s National Food Bank. The following is Kate’s reflection on what representing Israel means to her and includes an explanation of why she has chosen to support Leket in conjunction with the Israel Lacrosse Tzedakah Program. “I am incredibly honored to have been asked to serve on the coaching staff for Team Israel. My excitement is two-fold. First and foremost, I will have the opportunity to learn more and make real, tangible connections with my heritage. I have not had the chance to explore my religious roots in the past and I have been given this incredible opportunity to make up for lost time on that front. Secondly, I am excited to take this cultural journey with a team of dedicated lacrosse players that care for the game and our country immeasurably.
There is no one moment that I can think of that has defined my lacrosse career, but a number of moments. From the moment I committed to play lacrosse in college, to my Senior lacrosse game, to the moment I was brought on to coach at Georgetown, and finally to the moment I bought a last-minute plane ticket to Israel to chase a dream of going to the World Cup. All of these moments have led me to where I am today, and for that I cannot discount any of the smaller moments as more or less important than a personal best game, or any accolade I have received.
I will be coaching in honor of Leket, Israel’s National Food Bank. Leket leads the safe, effective and efficient collection and distribution of surplus nutritious food in Israel to those who need it.” – KG
